The Lineage of Meta-Puzzles — When Rules Themselves Started Moving

Fifty years of rewriting, from Sokoban to Baba Is You

Introduction

The idea that rules can move looks recent. The phrase started appearing in puzzle game writing right after Baba Is You. But the impulse to treat rules as something to manipulate, not just to obey, has roots much older than that.

This piece traces the fifty years that led up to it: Sokoban's push verb, the Zachtronics command queue, Patrick's Parabox's recursion, and finally Baba Is You's language.

Starting From One Verb

We don't usually call the 1981 Sokoban a meta-puzzle. But I think its roots are there. The player has only two verbs: walk and push. The objects in the room only have two states: pushable or not.

That extreme subtraction is the foundation everything later built on. Fewer rules make the combinatorial space visible. Designers had to make uniqueness of solution and the feel of discovery coexist within strict variables.

When a Sokoban level is solved, what stays in the player's head is the shape of the push flow. That flow is exactly the object that later meta-puzzles take as something to manipulate.

Add Verbs, or Make the Rules Move

From the 1990s into the 2010s, Sokoban's descendants forked two ways: 'add verbs' (Snakebird, Hexcells, Stephen's Sausage Roll) and 'make the rules move' (Antichamber, The Witness, Baba Is You).

On the add-verbs side, designers carefully tune the interaction between verbs. Stephen's Sausage Roll uses a single new variable — fork orientation — to multiply Sokoban's combinatorial explosion into something hostile and beautiful.

On the moving-rules side, designers keep the verbs fixed but multiply the variables that govern them. The Witness's panels only draw lines, but the meaning of symbols changes per area. The player learns new grammar with the body.

What Baba Is You Completed

Hempuli's Arvi Teikari released Baba Is You in 2019. It is the terminus of the second branch. The rule sentence WALL IS STOP sits on the board as a physical, pushable object.

What matters is that this wasn't a single bolt of genius. It was the last verb added to a long accumulation of design space. Sokoban's 'push' was extended to 'push word blocks too,' and the rest unfolded from there.

If you want to build a meta-puzzle now, simply imitating Baba's moving rules is already old. The remaining margin is in changing the direction or unit of how rules move — verbs that operate on other verbs, or rules that mutate over time.

Closing

The meta-puzzle keeps Sokoban's subtraction ethic while adding a single moving part on top. Add verbs, or expand the mobility of rules. Either branch still has empty space after fifty years.

As an indie maker I keep asking myself what fits into that empty space. I leave the same question with you: where will the next Baba come from?
