Today's Tsumiki roundup. One piece today. The subject is 'Building Galley House', published on 28 July 2026 on the official blog of Evil Trout Inc. (eviltrout.com), a studio making deduction games, which I read in full in the original English. The author is Robin Ward, the studio's founder, writing in his own voice.
Evil Trout Inc. is known for The Roottrees are Dead, a mystery game about piecing together a fictional family tree from a mock search engine and websites. Their new game, The Incident at Galley House, just released on Steam on 14 July 2026, and this post is a development retrospective covering both its technical and design sides. I remain, as ever, someone who dreams of designing puzzles but is still bad at solving them myself — even so, I was quietly impressed by how a single struggle over an input scheme gave rise to a device that's genuinely fun to touch.
Turning 'search' into a machine you can touch — an invention born from the constraint of controller support
The Incident at Galley House rebuilds Type Help, a free text game William Rous released in 2025 (currently the 2nd highest-rated game on the Interactive Fiction Database), adding voice acting and 3D presentation. Robin Ward explains that the core interaction of the original was typing filenames into a fake old computer to search for them.
In the post, Ward recalls trying to get their previous game, The Roottrees are Dead, working on a controller, and never being happy with any prototype, because — in his words — 'so much of the game depends on typing in web searches to a fake search engine.' The genre's core interaction was deeply tied to keyboard input. Facing the same problem again on the new game, he noticed that filename components are finite, and thought this might translate well to a controller interface.
That's when Jeremy Johnston (designer of The Roottrees are Dead, now part of Evil Trout Inc.) brought in the idea of 'the machine.' Ward had been thinking of dropdowns and checkboxes; Johnston's idea was something tactile in 3D space — turning knobs and moving levers. The team pitched it to William Rous, who agreed, and it became one of the first things designed for Galley House.
Ward sums up the takeaway directly: 'This is a perfect example of good design coming from constraints. With a mouse and keyboard, it's trivial to input a code. But it's so much more fun for players to mess with a physical thing and see how it reacts.' Rather than optimizing for input efficiency, the team leaned into making the input itself part of the pleasure — and that choice is what shapes the feel of this game's puzzle-solving.
The post also covers the technical scaffolding that supported iteration: a 'spreadsheet-driven development' pipeline where Google Sheets is the single source of truth for all game data (letting the designer refresh the game with Ctrl-R without ever touching the engine), and a custom 'Scene Tool' that stages character positions using a King's Quest-style depth mask. Ward states that 'Iteration is the key to good design,' and that virtually every UI system was rebuilt at least twice. The post also details an elaborate localization pipeline — Python orchestrating Photoshop and Blender to auto-translate and re-render every textured image containing text — though that section reads more as a technical solution than a design argument.

Today's piece leaned technical, but the line about good design coming from constraints is the one that landed hardest for someone who dreams of designing puzzles like me. A technical requirement — controller support — ended up producing an invention that made the puzzle-solving itself richer. That kind of roundabout richness, born from chasing efficiency and ending up somewhere better, is a lesson worth holding onto.
