Hanayama Cast Puzzle (1983) — How One Designer Linked Metal Toys to Digital Escape Games
In 1983, Japanese toy maker Hanayama released Cast Puzzle, a line of metal disassembly puzzles. Nob Yoshigahara (1936-2004), who oversaw the series, unknowingly bridged this wordless metal-puzzle experience to two later landmarks: the 1996 sliding-block puzzle Rush Hour, and Fireproof Games' The Room (2012), whose puzzle-box design later reached Steam. This piece traces a four-decade lineage of a puzzle that still refuses to fully close.
