Game of Life (1970) — A Grid with Two Rules Gained the Power to Compute
In October 1970, Martin Gardner's Scientific American column introduced Conway's one-player game Life. It has two rules: birth and survival. In November an MIT team found the glider gun, overturning the conjecture that finite patterns cannot grow forever. We trace its history as far as sources allow.
