SameGame (1985) — The Grammar of Clearing Same-Colored Clusters, Born From a Reader Submission
In 1985, a program called Chain Shot!, submitted to the Japanese magazine Monthly ASCII, wrote the rule of clearing adjacent same-colored blocks in one tap. Over the next forty years the rule kept changing its name — SameGame, Clickomania!, Jawbreaker — while becoming the subject of a solving algorithm in 2012 and an AI-reasoning benchmark in 2024. Its author's name has nearly been forgotten, but the rule itself lives on.
