From the same skeleton to a different puzzle: the Thinky Collective's “inherit just one thing” design experiment

Introduction

Today's Tsumiki roundup. One piece today. It is not about a flashy new mechanic but about a process experiment: how do several people make a puzzle game together? The subject is an article from the edited, puzzle-focused outlet Thinky Games (by Corey Hardt, published July 24, 2026), which I read in the original English.

I remain poor at solving puzzles. But from the maker's side, today's story was a treasure — because I could read, with a concrete example, a collaborative design procedure a loose developer community devised, in which adding just one constraint scatters everyone's invention in different directions.

The article introduces The Snake That Eats Puzzle Game Mechanics, a new browser game by the Thinky Collective, a loose community of puzzle gamedevs. It is not a single PuzzleScript game but a collection of single-screen games linked by small similarities: from the very start you can scroll the level select and pick from more than a dozen distinct games, Corey Hardt writes. Each has its own art, theme, and mechanics while sharing some element with the one before and after it.

The crux is how that sharing was arranged. Normally the Thinky Collective passes a single large PuzzleScript project file around, each person adding a level, some art, or a refinement of mechanics or difficulty curve. This time the method changed: as Corey puts it, “each dev received just one piece of the previous game and had to go from there, coming up with a miniature game consisting of just one level using the shared element they were given.”

That single constraint yields something interesting. Two adjacent games might use the same set of sprites and look alike, yet the mechanics assigned to those objects may have swapped. Or, in Corey's words, “even the shape of the level may have been preserved, but a whole new look and context changes the resulting puzzle completely.” From the same skeleton, a wholly different puzzle rises.

A dozen-plus new games (the article says 15+) are bundled at once, and with some work done on the selection interface the whole thing feels polished, Corey judges. A few play as “PuzzleScript Hard” — on the tougher side of little sokoban-style games. He also notes, for transparency under Thinky Games' editorial policy, that he has contributed to some of these games in the past but isn't worried about a conflict of interest since nobody makes money from these tiny experimental web puzzles. Why it matters as design talk. First, it is a clean case of “constraint producing divergence”: narrowing the inheritance to just one element forces each maker to start from shared material yet branch, unavoidably, toward a different solution. The shared thread keeps it a connected series; the constraint breeds variety — holding both at once is the design trick. Second, the observation that the same level shape becomes a different puzzle once its context changes is continuous with a theme discussed widely right now (how the same seed diverges into different games, which I touched on July 18): it is meaning and recontextualization, more than the raw mechanic, that decide the puzzle experience. Third, the lightness of treating a self-contained one-level piece as the smallest unit of design iteration. As a maker, I felt this “inherit one thing, build one level” rule is a practical template you could drop straight into a game jam or a team exercise. Without touching the “hardware” of the board, swapping the “software” of meaning is enough to give a puzzle a new life. For a maker, there are few gambits so economical and yet so bold.

In closing

As an aspiring designer, what drew me most today was the cleanness of the constraint: narrow the inheritance to a single thing. The thinner the shared thread, the freer the branches that grow from it — counterintuitive, perhaps, but a claim that would likely click once you tried it. I remain bad at solving puzzles, yet this “designing the prompt” is something I want to try myself someday.
