Soundtrack: The Talos Principle: Reawakened — under the tower I was told not to climb, a choir and a drone are waiting

Damjan Mravunac

Introduction — under the tower I was told not to climb, a choir and a drone are already playing

The Talos Principle: Reawakened is a first-person puzzle game where you play a newly awakened AI, walking through ruins and rerouting lasers to break seals (see Komugi's review — difficulty "hard," roughly 25 hours to finish). The first area opens with "Virgo Serena," a stately choir sample layered over an organ-like drone. Its tempo sits around 60 BPM, by my ear. Nothing here is trying to rush you.

The composer is Damjan Mravunac, the man behind the roaring synths and gunfire of Croteam's Serious Sam series. Here he went the opposite way. "We decided that we needed to keep the player relaxed all the time," he told Laced Records. The ruined stone, the unmoving clouds, the distant tower — the whole scene holds still. The music matches its pace.First-person puzzle view among stone ruins, with a laser beam visible in the distanceThe Talos Principle: Reawakened (Steam store screenshot)

What makes this a puzzle score — how to keep playing for 14 hours without wearing out its welcome

Mravunac says this was the first time he set out to deliberately avoid writing a strong melody. "It was the first time I had to consciously avoid adding strong rhythm or memorable melodies to songs, as they were supposed to loop for a quite long time." My own playtime for this one runs about 25 hours — meaning any given track loops that many times over.

So the foundation is a single, mostly static drone. Short, more active fragments get layered on top and cross-faded in and out depending on what the player does — entering a new area, solving a puzzle. Rather than add melody, the design adds or removes layers to signal progress.A cube and a laser receiver set out in a ruined plaza, the puzzle's building blocks laid bareThe Talos Principle: Reawakened (Steam store screenshot)

The analogy to the puzzles — two things that refuse to rush you toward the answer

The Talos Principle's puzzles are about observation: you reroute laser beams through connectors and jammers. There's no timer. You can trace the same clue with your eyes as many times as you need. Even when you're stuck, the music never signals "hurry up." The drone just keeps being there.

What I find interesting is that this is neither silence nor chiptune — a third option. Stephen's Sausage Roll protects long thinking with silence; Baba Is You uses chiptune to push you toward trying things faster. The Talos Principle chose a sound that keeps playing without ever resolving. The chords never quite land before the next layer arrives. It never interrupts a long think, and it never gets boring either.

Tracks worth hearing

Start with "When in Rome," the placeholder that became the whole series' voice. Damjan Mravunac's own channel has it up.

Then the main-menu theme, "Virgo Serena" — Gregorian choir samples over a synth drone, and the piece that started this article.

Closing — what I'd steal

What I'd steal is the design itself: a static drone as a foundation, with short, swappable layers on top. When you're writing for a piece whose length you can't predict, adding and removing layers keeps a listener from tiring of it — better than stretching one melody thin.Looking up at the tower from the ruins at dusk, the series' signature viewThe Talos Principle: Reawakened (Steam store screenshot)

Play this one back on a night when you're thinking something through slowly. Let "Virgo Serena" run while your own work refuses to wrap up. For a companion piece, I covered Myst a while back — an island that decided to have no music at all, set beside a tower that keeps playing without ever concluding. Both are connected by that same refusal to rush you.
