The Best Wordle Alternatives in 2026 — 14 Free Daily Puzzles Worth Your Streak

A guide to daily games beyond word-guessing: logic, numbers, and space

What a Wordle successor actually needs

Wordle's real invention wasn't word-guessing. It was a ritual format: everyone gets the same puzzle, once a day, and can brag about the result without spoiling it. When you look for a successor, check whether that format survives before you check the genre.

This guide picks 14 games against three conditions: (1) the same puzzle ships to everyone on a daily schedule, (2) it's free in the browser with no forced app install or account, and (3) results can be shared spoiler-free. Paid apps and ad-farms didn't make the cut.

Full disclosure: we at Puzzlebyrinth run our own daily puzzles. To keep the sales pitch honest, our own games live in the first section below, clearly labeled — everything after that is other people's excellent work.

Our own four — morning, noon, evening, and monthly

Tridem (new puzzle 6:00 JST) is a sliding puzzle where three pieces glide together in the same direction until they hit a wall. The movement rule changes by weekday — gentle Mondays, fangs on weekends. Three to five minutes a day, no account.

CRYPTEM (12:00 JST) is a cipher lock: rotate reels until five columns decode to their targets. The cipher table is fully deducible from the opening position, so guessing is never required.

Math? (18:00 JST) is a rule-deduction number puzzle where the meaning of five symbols reshuffles every day. You reverse-engineer what each symbol does from nothing but the results of your placements.

The monthly Tetro 15 asks you to tile a board with numbered tetrominoes so every row and column sums to 15 — fifty puzzles a month, from 4×4 up to 8×8.

All four ship only after the engine itself has verified each board is solvable. An unsolvable puzzle is structurally impossible here.

Word games — the direct lineage that still holds up

Connections (New York Times) sorts 16 word cards into four groups. The click of certainty right after an insight is stronger than Wordle's, and wrong guesses make better excuses. It lives on the same NYT Games page as Wordle itself.

Squaredle is a trace-the-grid word search with a daily quota — it fixes Wordle's "over in three minutes" problem.

Semantle gives you only one signal: how semantically close your guess is to the hidden word. Bewildering at first, but walking the map of meaning is an experience nothing else offers.

If you read Japanese, the kanji-guessing family (hint by radical and stroke count) has settled in as a genre of its own, alongside the five-kana word game Kotonoha Tango.

Logic & number games — where guessing gets you nowhere

Sumplete is subtractive Picross: delete numbers until every row and column hits its target sum. The rules take ten seconds; the big boards make you reach for pen and paper.

Murdle serves one murder a day, solved on a logic grid. Suspect × weapon × location elimination is classic, but the one-case-per-day pacing is what made it good enough to become a book series.

Clues by Sam has you spot liars from residents' interdependent testimonies — closer to a gamebook than a grid.

Nerdle is equation-guessing in eight cells, the most successful straight transplant of Wordle's grammar into arithmetic.

Geography, space & observation — games about looking

Worldle shows you a country's silhouette; each miss reports distance and bearing to the answer. You'll absorb more map than any geography class. Its sibling Globle uses a 3D globe that glows hotter as you get closer.

TimeGuessr hands you one photograph and asks for the year and the place. History and observation tested at once, five rounds a day.

Chronophoto is the lightweight year-guessing specialist. Whether you can tell the 1990s from the 2000s will date you precisely.

The trick to keeping streaks: anchor games to hours

The single most effective habit trick isn't adding more games — it's anchoring each game to an hour: Tridem with morning coffee, Connections at lunch, Murdle before bed.

Stack five or six games in the same time slot because they're all fun, and the whole streak collapses within two weeks. Three dailies is the sustainable maximum.

This is exactly why our own puzzles stagger their updates at 6:00, 12:00, and 18:00 JST. The puzzles hub shows your daily progress across all of them, which doubles as a lineup manager.

Frequently asked questions

Q. All free? — Every one of the 14 games here plays today's puzzle for free. Some (NYT games, our own archives) put back-catalogues or extra modes behind registration or a subscription.

Q. Do they work on phones? — All of them, in the browser. Not a single app install required.

Q. Is Wordle itself over? — Not remotely. It's still the biggest daily game in the world; this guide is for people looking for what to play alongside it.

If you want exhaustive lists, directories like Listdle and The Dles categorize hundreds of dailies. They're a mixed bag, though — start with the fourteen above.
