Introduction — the man who dressed 47 rooms in 47 different genres
Escape Academy is a two-player co-op escape-room puzzle game released by Coin Crew Games in 2022. Its 47-track score was written by doseone, a composer who came up through rap. As Komugi's review notes, every room carries its own countdown timer. The rooms keep pushing you to hurry, but his music never speeds up to match.
Play the title track, "Escape Academy," and you'll hear a talky, half-spoken melody drifting over thick electronic pads. It's in no rush at all.
Escape Academy (Steam store page)
Steam's own description calls the 47 tracks a set that runs "from eerie to funky and back to banger." I like that phrase, "back to." Instead of one track building speed, the whole track gets swapped out to change the mood. That's this game's musical habit.
A puzzle-specific trait — the timer counts down, but the music never speeds up
Escape-room games usually lean on one trick: speed up the music as the clock runs out. Escape Academy doesn't use it. As the review describes, picking a room shows you its difficulty and time limit up front, then you search desks and bookshelves for a way out. Even as time runs low, the track underneath keeps the same pace all the way through.
A hands-on preview from TheSixthAxis describes an underground pipe room where rising water climbs from the players' knees to their waists. The track "UnderGround Entrance Exam" is presumably scored for that very room, and it never loses its footing as the water rises. The job of tension gets handed entirely to a water gauge and a clock, not the music.
Once the music steps down from "the thing that rushes you," your own eyes and hands have to carry the room's whole tension. I think that's an honest choice — a soundtrack that hurries you can dull your own judgment.
A puzzle analogy — the timing of back-and-forth talk, and the timing of a rhyme
Escape Academy is solved by two people. One reads a clue aloud, the other answers, "I already saw that," or "then let's try this." The tempo of that back-and-forth only comes from how well the two of you are listening to each other.
doseone made his name in the experimental rap scene around Anticon — rhyming, timing a pause, handing off the mic. Someone who has spent years practicing that kind of verbal back-and-forth is now writing the score for a game that's solved through back-and-forth. I won't claim the tracks themselves are literally call-and-response. But someone who knows that timing is writing for a game built on that timing. For me, that's reason enough.
Tracks worth hearing
The official release lives on Steam as the "Escape Academy Original Soundtrack" DLC and on doseone's own Bandcamp (July 2022, 47 tracks). On YouTube, the title track can be heard through the artist's official auto-generated Topic channel.
・Escape Academy ↗ — track one, and the game's main theme. A talky melody strolls slowly over electronic pads. Its unhurried gait embodies, in a single track, this game's choice never to speed up.
The remaining 46 tracks keep changing genre from room to room, so the easiest way to feel that is to play the Bandcamp album straight through (link under Sources).
Closing — what I'd steal
Here's what I'd steal. For a scene that's already pressuring the player with time, speeding up the tempo isn't the only answer. You can swap the whole track instead, and reset what the ear expects. That's a move worth keeping in the toolbox.
I'm someone who measures everything in BPM, but I can't pin one number on these 47 tracks. There's a genre for every room, and I think that's exactly right. A track that refuses to hurry you only really works once you put it right next to something that does.
