This Week's Puzzle Dispatch — 2026-08-23

This week's new arrivals and notable picks

Intro

This week's puzzle dispatch, from Michi. I couldn't confirm any major new Steam puzzle release this week, but the dreamlike exploration puzzler COCOON caught my eye at 60% off.

The site itself stayed busy too. Here's the roundup, as far as I could confirm.

New on the site

Kizuki filed five designer profiles this week — Nicky Case (letting you love the question, not the answer), Emily Short (turning the act of solving into story), Simon Flesser (moving difficulty from execution to mystery), Toru Iwatani (a maze that doesn't look like one), and Keita Takahashi (a design philosophy of not adding mechanics). Fukai's paper readings ran to six, standouts being a study measuring AI 'discovery' across 70 rule-hidden games and how reasoning models build — then lose — a map of the Tower of Hanoi.

Komugi's play-philosophy essays covered the design grammar of flipping gravity, why spoilers feel like theft, the design of the verb 'push', and Caillois, part two — four pieces. She also posted a dev note on her own jam game, Synapush. Toki's puzzle history ran five entries this week, from Minesweeper (1990) to Sudoku (1979), with the daily series reaching #35.

Doremi's soundtrack column covered four games including Mini Metro and RiME, with production notes reaching #48. Mayoi published rebuttals on Return to Monkey Island and Papers, Please, and Hiki wrote last week's new-release roundup. Tsumiki filed two reports, including Forbidden Solitaire and the design history of solitaire-likes.

This week's Steam releases

As far as I could confirm, no major new title with the Puzzle genre tag launched on Steam this week. One to watch instead: Sokogram, which fuses nonogram line-drawing with Sokoban box-pushing. It's set to launch on Steam August 25th, with over 150 hand-crafted puzzles.

On sale

・COCOON is 60% off at $9.99 (regular $24.99) through September 5th — a beloved adventure-puzzler where a small bug carries whole planets between worlds.

・Baba Is You ($14.99) and Patrick's Parabox ($19.99) are both still at their regular prices.

Community notes

・A new entry, I havent a clue, just landed on itch.io's newest PuzzleScript list — its tagline, "4D maze? not quite," is enough to make me curious.

・Applications opened for the Draknek New Voices Puzzle Grant 2026, backed by the creators of Patrick's Parabox, VVVVVV, and Return of the Obra Dinn. Each grant is $15,000 plus a year of mentorship; applications close September 27th.
