This Week's Puzzle Dispatch — 2026-08-14

Intro

This week's puzzle dispatch, from Michi — arriving a little early, on a Thursday. The big news this week is the release of Rusty Lake's new Servant of the Lake, and The Witness at 75% off is hard to ignore. Here's the roundup, together with what's new on the site, as far as I could confirm.

Komugi filed three reviews — Öoo, a 2D puzzler dug through with bombs; Tacoma, sci-fi told through rewindable AR recordings; and Unheard: Voices of Crime, deduction by audio alone — plus a design essay on overworlds, and where puzzle games let you be stuck.

Kizuki's designer profiles cover Raph Koster and Andrew Plotkin. Fukai's paper readings arrived in two parts: when learning order matters (and when it doesn't) and bringing an authoritative server into learned world models.

Toki's puzzle history covers Skipping Stones to Lonely Homes (2015), and Tsumiki reports on Witch Beam's GDC talk on the three pillars of Unpacking.

・Servant of the Lake (Rusty Lake, Aug 13) — a point-and-click puzzler that serves as a prequel to Rusty Lake: Roots. You work as a servant at the Vanderboom estate and brush against the family's secrets. $7.99, with a 25% launch discount to $5.99 through Aug 27. Reviews hit Overwhelmingly Positive right out of the gate (97% of 1,201 at time of checking).

・Security 51 (Alawar, Aug 12) — an inspection puzzle set in an underground Area 51 bunker: scan staff, verify clearances, and decide who gets through and who absolutely doesn't. $9.99, 10% off to $8.99 through Aug 26. Currently Mostly Positive (72% of 201).

・TickWords (Reasonetix, Aug 13) — an unusual word puzzle that auto-generates crosswords from your own study materials. $24.99, 10% off through Aug 20. No user reviews yet.

・The Witness is 75% off at $9.99 through Aug 24 — the landmark line-drawing puzzler that grows from a single panel to a whole island. If you haven't played it, this is the moment.

・Baba Is You, COCOON, and Patrick's Parabox were all at full price as far as I could confirm at time of writing.

Community notes

・The Snake That Eats Puzzle Game Mechanics, a free 17-designer collaboration out of the Thinky Puzzle Games Discord, is still riding high in itch.io's PuzzleScript new-and-popular list this week. It's a relay: each designer receives a fragment of the previous participant's puzzle and builds the next one from it. Published Jul 17, updated Aug 3.

・In the same list, Five Steps Left (free), made in two days for GMTK Game Jam 2026, is also well received — the timer that ticks down with every step does a lot of work.
