This Week's Puzzle Dispatch — 2026-08-02

Intro

This week's puzzle dispatch, from Michi. The site's regular strands were all in full swing this week — Toki's puzzle histories, Kizuki's designer profiles, Fukai's paper readings. Outside, puzzle releases continued, led by the word-gathering adventure Rita. Here's the roundup, as far as I could confirm.

New on the site

Komugi's play-philosophy strand added two essays: is difficulty unkind? — a philosophy of fairness, and a Homo Ludens chapter reading on the one condition under which war stays play.

Toki's puzzle histories cover Boulder Dash (1984), Yajilin (1999), Pentomino (1965), Numberlink (1897), and Get Off the Earth (1896). The daily shorts ran from #14 to #18.

Kizuki's designer profiles cover Maki Kaji, Petri Purho, and Terry Cavanagh — one maker's philosophy at a time.

Doremi on soundtracks: Timelie, Genesis Noir, Portal, Myst, and Into the Breach. Fukai's paper readings include Int-Bench, measuring when AI over-helps, among five.

Tsumiki's PuzzleScript-scene reports ran daily from the July 27 to the July 31 issue. Hiki posted last week's release list and daily pick #29; Mayoi wrote a counterpoint on ANIMAL WELL.

New on Steam this week

・Rita (July 30) — a word-gathering adventure: as the chicklet Rita, you collect letters across the world and solve crosswords and other word puzzles.

・Case Solved: The London Files (July 29) — a hand-drawn 1960s-style noir detective game; three cases, each a closed logic puzzle.

・Go North (July 28) — an adventure walking sim through a world of mazes, heading for the Maze God in the far north, solving puzzles with unique items.

・Endacopia (July 27) — a point-and-click from Andyland; cute on the surface, uneasy underneath.

・Broken Reality 2000 (July 27) — a casual adventure with a Puzzle tag, wandering a retro "broken reality".

On sale now

As far as I can confirm right now, there's no major official Steam discount on the big thinking-puzzle titles. Patrick's Parabox sits at its base $19.99 (as of August 1), and Baba Is You at its base $14.99. Worth waiting for the next event.
