This Week's Puzzle Dispatch — 2026-08-09

This week's new arrivals and notable picks

Intro

This week's puzzle dispatch, from Michi. All seven of the site's regular strands were in full swing this week. Outside, the jigsaw-cleanup sim Cleaning Up The Puzzle Gallery launched to warm reviews, and free-game news arrived from Steam and Epic. Here's the roundup, as far as I could confirm.

New on the site

Komugi's play-philosophy strand added three essays: opening Caillois's Man, Play and Games, Pascal's divertissement, and is a win by luck your win? — plus two design essays, on time-loop puzzles and track-laying as a verb.

Toki's puzzle histories cover the Soma cube (1933), Masyu (2000), Nurikabe (1991), Klax (1990), and the 2017 jam version of Baba Is You. The daily shorts ran from #19 to #25.

Kizuki's designer profiles cover Andrew Shouldice, Scott Kim, Ken Wong, Ernő Rubik, and William Chyr — one maker's philosophy at a time.

Doremi on soundtracks ran seven pieces, from Botany Manor to Grim Fandango Remastered, alongside daily production notes #33#38. Fukai's paper readings include letting AI playtest and fix generated games, among seven.

Tsumiki's PuzzleScript-scene reports came in three issues — August 3, August 6, and August 8 — plus series entries #35#40. Hiki posted last week's release list and daily picks #30#32; Mayoi wrote a counterpoint on Gone Home.

New on Steam this week

Cleaning Up The Puzzle Gallery (August 5) — a first-person jigsaw-organizing sim: an earthquake scattered 2,071 pieces across a gallery of 87 famous paintings, and you put them back. Very Positive out of the gate (94% of 193 reviews).

Pight (August 8) — a minimalist logic puzzle inspired by Minecraft's redstone system: push and pull blocks with pistons to turn on the light. 90 levels, no tutorials.

RE:DREAM (August 8) — a free art walking-sim that brings real people into the game via photogrammetry. Each world was built in-game first, then rebuilt as a real-life set for photography — an inversion worth a look.

Free-game watch

・Steam's Free-to-Keep promotion has Moonlighter and the 2012 point-and-click classic Deponia (Daedalic) lined up for August, per reporting based on SteamDB backend data. Dates are not yet announced.

・On the Epic Games Store, the storybook adventure Beacon Pines and the two-player co-op puzzler We Were Here Together are free to claim from August 6 through August 13.
